Statistical Consulting vs. Statistical Projects
In consulting, the consultant uses expertise to guide, teach, and advise the client on the best course of action in the data analysis. The consultant will often suggest resources that will help the client master the topic of discussion. The client, not the consultant, performs the data analysis, and is ultimately responsible for the statistical procedures chosen. The focus is on coaching the client to acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to perform the statistics well.
In projects, the client gives the statistician the data, and the statistician performs the analysis, creates the design, writes the program, etc. A statistical project can be a small part of the overall data management and analysis (i.e., writing a single program to merge data files) or the entire thing (raw data are sent to the statistician, who oversees data entry, cleaning, management, analysis, and writes the report). The statistician, not the client, performs the data analysis, and is ultimately responsible for the statistical procedures chosen.
